There are four basic types of pollution: Air, Noise, Water, and Solid. These systems may be interrelated and care must be taken that the complete systems are estimated. For example, Air Pollution Equipment may include dust and air-entrained particles that have to be collected. The vacuum systems could be noisy, requiring silencers to reduce noise pollution, and the collected solids have to be disposed of to prevent Solid Pollution. Water Treatment may be accomplished as comparatively small packaged plants providing Chemical, Biological or Thermal Treatment. These are usually priced by GPH or GPD. Large plants and municipal treatment facilities are sized MGD. These facilities are usually priced in two steps. First, the large concrete structures used as settling ponds, etc.; and second, the equipment required. Storm water does not need as much treatment as sanitary wastewater. The total cost of the system is greatly affected by the level of purification required by specifications and codes before release. An additional cost may be encountered if there is a possibility that the water being treated may contain petroleum products, which have to be isolated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner.
