MasterFormat™ is a product of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada, and it is published by CSI. More information on CSI and MasterFormat™ can be obtained by going to the CSI website, at http://www.csinet.org .
In general, the MasterFormat is a specifications standard by which construction requirements, products and activities are organized. The purpose of such a standard is so that communications between professionals in the construction industry can have a common basis.
The image below shows the MasterFormat selection tool. Use the pull-down menu to choose MasterFormat 1995 or 2010.

In 1995, MasterFormat™ 95 was created. This 12-digit numbering system organizes construction requirements, products and activities into the 16 CSI divisions. In 2010, MasterFormat™ 2010 was created for the purpose of replacing and improving MasterFormat™ 95. Part of the reason for this improvement was due to the growing number of modern technologies, materials and procedures that were not already covered by MasterFormat™ 95.
MeansCostworks.com allows the user to access both MasterFormat™ numbering systems.
The first 5 digits in a CSI number that uses MasterFormat™ 95 designate sections within each of the 16 divisions.

In contrast, with MasterFormat™ 2010, the first 6 digits identify sections within each of 50 divisions.
